This sounds like exactly the same problem I had about a week ago. I followed 
your advise Jacob and deleted ~.ICEauthority and that did the trick for me 
(thanks). I am running Red Hat 6.0 and the Gnome that came with it. Have 
upgraded Gnome since then, as this is apparently a bug.
