How do YOU check for new mail in GNOME?

I have run into a slight problem which isn't caused by GNOME, but could
possibly be solved by it...

I currently use procmail to process incoming mail into IMAP folders.
(Is this a correct/incorrect thing to do? I don't know, but that's
another topic ;-)

The problem is that the GNOME "mailcheckers" - specifically Mail Check
Applet - only seem to check the IMAP "Inbox" rather than multiple
IMAP folders.

Is it possible to query an IMAP server and ask it if there are *any*
messages? Could a mail check applet be written to do this?

Or is it much more complicated than that?
