dialing but no audio using RH dialer in gnome

When I dial my ISP I can't hear what is going on (I have heard the dialer
once, but only once). What is going on and how can I fix it? I find it really
disconcerting not being able to hear what's going on since my ISP (provided by
work -> below) is really flakey.
