The project of the week is supposed to be a small, very easily
fullfilled patch to a program, a configuration option or ...

How about this:

There are screenshot applications all over the place, but their use is
rather clumsy I believe. How about an applet. 
You click the applett to tell: lets take a screenshot.
Then you click anywhere on the desktop and drag open a rectangle of
the desired size. When you release the mouse button, you have the
corners of your screenshot defined. Voila. Draw some window borders
around it or open the screenshot in the eye of gnome... and you are
able to save it to a file.

Would this be hard to implement?
