WHy does gnome-session take longer to start under xdm than with startx?

I'm figuring it obviously must have something to do with mny xdm setup;
authentication, perhaps?
If anyone's interested in helping me solve this mystery, I'll be glad to share
my xdm config files with them.
I really like Gnome a lot, and I also like to have my machine boot into a
graphical login. Unfortunately, gdm has not yet been ported to FreeBSD (I
tried porting it myself a while back, but gave up), so xdm is what I'm using for
the time being.
Any clues would be greatly appreciated.
