Copying, Cutting, & Pasting

Hello,

I'm trying to get an understanding of how copying,
cutting, & pasting are done.  (From a programmer's
point of view.)

I've read about 'cut buffers', I've read about 'selections',
and I've read mentions of doing it with ICCCM.  Although
I'm not sure I fully understand all of it yet.

How does GNOME handle this?  Does it use one or more of
these methods, or does it have its own convetion for
doing this?
