Actually this is very common problem. When you have the init level set
to 5, X will repeatedly start and stop so you won't have time to log into
a console.
To fix it you will need to reboot (you should be able to do a ctrl-alt-del
from a console before X kicks in again) and enter a lilo command like:
LILO: linux 1 or
LILO: linux 3
This will boot you into a run level that doesn't load X and give you time
to change and test you setup.
In future, don't go to runlevel 5 without a tested configuration.
