gnome problems - HELP PLEASE!

I'm running gnome with red hat linux 6.0...I get the following message on
the screen  and gnome does not come up

according to /var/run/gdm.pid, gdm was already running (process id) but
seems to have been murdered mysteriously.
INIT: Id "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes.

I've tried removing /var/run/gdm.pid  and still I'm getting the same
problem...Any ideas??
