No access to applets

Hi all,

fairly simple question. I've installed gnome-core-1.1.1 and
gnome-applets-1.1.1. I used the included .spec file to create an RPM and
install the gnome-core, but the gnome-applets tarball I have lacks one
so I compiled and installed it manually with --prefix=/usr.

I copied .gnome, .gnome-desktop and .gnome_private to backups and
started X. Everything is fine except for the fact that I can't seem to
add any applets using the standard dialogue. I can however start an
applet from a terminal and have it show up properly on the panel.
