Compiling gtk

Hello all!

I'm currently trying to compile gtk 1.2.6 but it won't work.
The linker always aborts with

.libs/libgtk.so: undefined reference to `_Xsetlocale'
make[2]: *** [testgtk] Error 1
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make: *** [all-recursive-am] Error 2

I thought my old Xlib might be the problem, so I upgraded
to 3.3.6 but it didn't help. What's missing?
