Running Gnome terminal/xterm

Help!

I can't run gnome-terminal and rxvt any more (except as root).
gnome-terminal tells me it's probably due to incorrectly
configured Unix98 pty's and xterm simply bails out with
'permission denied', while rxvt still works as it should.
What's going on?

Any ideas?
