Where do iconized programs go?

Hi,

I'm using october Gnome and sawmill 21 (this also happens 
with enlightenment). When I iconifiy a program it completely
disapears from the desktop and I then have to do a ps to kill 
it.

There used to be a window that contained all iconized programs
but at some point I closed it. Was that window from enlightenment
or gnome?

What I'd really like is for iconized programs to disapear from
the desktop but be accessable from a task menu but I'm pretty sure
there is no task menu applet.
