Time setting, gdm, and ntpdate

I'm a bit confused. I compiled the latest version of ntp and (after
determining that our intranet's time servers wouldn't talk to the daemon on
my workstation) set up ntpdate to be run from cron every hour. Checking the
cron and system logs, I see that ntpdate is performing its function
correctly. However, when I log in through gdm, the time resets to 4.5 hours
earlier. Here is the relevant part of /var/log/messages:

Feb 16 04:05:58 localhost PAM_pwdb[5266]: (su) session opened for user news
by (uid=0)
Feb 16 04:06:00 localhost PAM_pwdb[5266]: (su) session closed for user news
Feb 16 06:01:04 localhost ntpdate[5355]: adjust time server 10.7.248.27
offset -0.003624 sec
Feb 16 07:27:24 localhost gdm[4978]: Couldn't authenticate
Feb 16 02:57:48 localhost PAM_pwdb[4978]: (gdm) session opened for user
gaspar by (uid=0)
Feb 16 02:57:48 localhost gdm[4978]: gdm_slave_session_start: gaspar on :0
Feb 16 02:58:02 localhost gnome-name-server[5437]: starting
Feb 16 02:58:02 localhost gnome-name-server[5437]: name server starting

What is happening here? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks--
