GTK Event Sounds

Is there a way to tun off sounds just for certain events in the
control-panel?  I don't want the GTK event sounds.  In some apps they
sound nice, in others they don't.  Especially seeing as how I get poor
sound quality out of the esound, but perfect through OSS.  Maybe there
should also be a way to select the sound output subsytem for
GNOME/GTK sounds (like you can do with XMMS, for example).
