Menu Anti-aliasing selections (Bug?)

I've noticed that, while icons on menus are nicely blended into the
menu, when an item is selected things revert to the old 1 bit alpha
chanel--icons blend around the edges to the un-hilighted background,
then at the 50% ransparency point, the selected background is used.  Is
this a bug? (a feature? ;-) Any plans to fix this?
