tearing out my hair

crazy annoying problem here. i'll boot into linux and start
x, and suddenly my tasklist and desk guide applets are gone
from the panel, and none of the capplets work in the control
center. when i click on any of them, i get this msg:

  ** WARNING **: Unable reach the control-center.
  Exiting...

the particulars - suse 6.4, sawfish, all the latest updates
from helix.

what do i do to troubleshoot this problem? i can't even
pinpoint when it happens - i just look up and the applets
are gone. lame. this has happened on 3 different machines
now.
