gnome-terminal dies with transparent background

I installed Mandrake 7.1 with Helix Gnome 1.2 and, when I try to set the
Gnome Terminal background to transparent, the terminal window will die (no
coredump). It almost looks like it exits rather than crashes.
This crash seems related to the fact that I'm using Enlightenment because
the problem doesn't occur when I set the background to "no background" in
the Enlightenment prefs. However, running gnome terminal under 
Enlightenment by itself (no Gnome) works fine with or without a
background. Has anyone else been seeing this behaviour?
