I've been fighting with this same problem.

I have no entry in gdm.conf regarding the terminal it runs on. I think it is an X configuration issue. Also, both xdm and kdm start on my suse 6.4 box without problems. If I boot to console, and then execute gdm as root, it runs on vt7 just fine. If I suid root gdm, and reboot to run level 3, I again have the lack of keyboard situation.

Still looking for answers...

BTW, where is the helix bug list? Is there a searchable FAQ as well. I looked without sucess the other day.
