Installing Gnome?

I'm considering installing gnome in /usr/local/gnome in order to
improve the 'cleanliness' of my system. Is this a good idea?
Would it make compiling new gnome programs painful?
I generally like to compile all new apps from sources.
Any pros or cons are welcome.
