I had a similar problem after upping.  In my case it wouldn't seem to
write the ~/.gnome/wm-properties/Config file (I had experienced a crash
and ended up removing .gnome from my user directory to try and get a
clean start).

So I took my Config file from the old pre-crash .gnome backup and it
starts WindowMaker with no problems now.
