With the volume of messages on this list I missed the original problem
(sorry) so I'm not sure my response is relevant.
I made Gnome/Enlightenment work with my dynamic (Ricochet wireless
modem) hostname by hacking the scripts to set my hostname to the one
associated with my dynamic IP assignment at startup. If the ppp
interface doesn't come up before the window manager I just restart the
window manager so it will pick up today's hostname.
The Red Hat 5.something scripts automatically set an uninitialized
hostname when the ppp connection was established. Red Hat explicitly
disabled this in 6.0 for some reason.
