gdm installation is a little more involved than the average package.
There's a README.install file included that details many of the steps. You
also will want to make sure that there is a PAM config file for gdm
(/etc/pam.d/gdm) - this is supposed to get installed by 'make install',
but it doesn't hurt to check :)
