HELP: Different problem with black icons.

I am puzzled by this problem.

(Note: I have read the FAQ)

When starting gnome everything seems to work except I get black shaped
icons.  I checked the FAQ, that addressed this problem and I am running a
good PNG library (libpng-2.1.0.3-1).  The strange part is that when I su
to root or other users, I do get real color icons.  The user CHRIS (which
is what I am most of the time, and which has almost as many permissions as
does root) just gets the black icon shapes for every gnome app.

How can I get icons for user CHRIS?
