Problem with 16 bit colours?

When I use GNOME on a 16 bit display, the colours of the desktop
icons, menu icons and Sawmill window decorations are all screwed up.
Pictures are displayed wrong in Electric Eyes, too.

But the panel icons, images displayed in Gimp, and all other X
applications I've tried work correctly (like StarOffice).

Clearly, some component isn't happy with 16 bit colour. The
question is, which one? Which library is common to gmc, ee and
sawmill, but not used for panel icons? Imlib, perhaps?

There are no problems when on an 8-bit display. This is using a
remote X session through VNC, which might be a factor.
Solaris 2.6 / latest release of GNOME (1.1 unstable, imlib-1.9.7,
gtk-1.2.6).

I notice there is an --enable-16-bit-color flag for ImageMagick.
Is this a factor? I rebuild it with this flag, but it had no effect.

Ideas?
