This is a "FEATURE." (We've heard that before). Um, I dislike it as well.
In the GNOME control center, there are options to configure exaclty what is
done when a CD is put in the drive (I like it automatically playing music
CDs), but for some reason, the options don't stay the way I select them (is
this a known bug, GNOME people?).
Um, I think you can remove the magicdev program (rpm -e magicdev, when it's
not running) to remove this feature if you hate it as much as you seem to.
I would love it if the configuration would keep my selections, and if I
could select to NOT place icons on the desktop (I don't use them, either).
