xgettext with Gnome

I have problems with the internationalization support provided by Gnome.
I do not seem to have the proper xgettext installed. Sometimes configure can
figure this out and ignores xgettext, sometimes it doesn't find any problems
and only runs into problems when I start to build. Then, I have to configure
with --disable-nls.

Is this a familiar problem? (I have SuSE 6.1 installed, but run Gnome from the
source tarballs.) How (and where) can I get a proper version of xgettext?

PPS Apart from this I have no problems with Gnome and I love it!
