Infinite Make loop compiling gnumeric from CVS

I downloaded gnumeric from CVS today, did ./autogen.sh followed by make or
make dist, and encountered an infinite loop...

make[2]: Entering directory `/usr/local/src/gnome/gnumeric/src'
cd .. \
  && CONFIG_FILES=src/Makefile CONFIG_HEADERS= /bin/sh ./config.status
creating src/Makefile
make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/local/src/gnome/gnumeric/src'
make[2]: Entering directory `/usr/local/src/gnome/gnumeric/src'
cd .. \
  && CONFIG_FILES=src/Makefile CONFIG_HEADERS= /bin/sh ./config.status
creating src/Makefile
make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/local/src/gnome/gnumeric/src'

I have bonobo installed, so there is a rule in src/Makefile that says that
the Makefile itself depends on some CORBA-generated files (Gnumeric-common.c,
Gnumeric-skels.c, Gnumeric-stubs.c, Gnumeric.h) but make never seems to get
round to generating these files at all. I can't see anything wrong with the
makefile (it's autogenerated anyway). I'm using make 3.77 (RedHat RPM) and
automake 1.4a. Is this a make bug?
