ppp daemon died unexpectedly

I am using Mandrake Linux.
Each time I start pppd using gnome-ppp, it responses that the ppp daemon
died unexpectedly. I've tried this before on redhat 5.2, and Mandrake and
Redhat are probably the same. Anyone have idea on how to solve this?
