Modem Lights Applet

I just reinstalled my system (GNOME was giving me a hard time, so I
decided to reinstall everything from scratch).  I have my PPP conenction
working perfectly.  I setup the Modem Lights Applet.  It can connect,
but it doesn't detect that the connection is up.  Thus, I also can't
disconnect with it.  I don't have anything different in this
configuration than I did last time as far as I can tell.  What did I
configure wrong?  Is it a kernel option I missed in my recompilation,
something in my PPP configuration, or something else altogethet?
