I've been able to reproduce this one, or at least similar (after a failed
attempt at password, delete the failed attempt and type in again, and it
appears as normal text instead of *s) with --disable-sound in there.. I
doubt it's to do with esd.. This is from the beta3 deb that's in amongst
potato..
