cvs compile ORBit pblm

Hi 
I am trying to learn how to compile Gnome from CVS.
I am using http://www.ece.ucdavis.edu/~sdeutsch/Gnome-E.faq.html
as a guide (by the way, is that doc up to date? It says
March 1999...).
I am stuck on ORBit.
It stops at:

make[4]: Entering directory `/usr/local/src/GnomeCVS/ORBit/popt/po'
msgfmt -o cs.mo cs.po
usage: msgfmt [ -dv ] [ - ] [ name ... ]
cs.mo: No such file or directory

Is the Makefile wrong trying to throw msgfmt a "-o", or is 
my msgfmt behind the times or am I completely off track?
Oh yeah, I am using the gettext-0.10.35-41 rpm on SuSE 6.2.
