Swallowing E pager

I went and rebuilt all of GNOME and E from tarballs.  I've got it set
up so that E actually starts as my WM, and gnome starts up when I type
'startx'.  The only thing that I'm missing, is that nifty little block
on my edge pager that showed all of my virtual desktops from E.  I
tired to set E's panel,and then swallow it, but that doesn't seem to
have worked.  Anybody know how to get this bugger back?  Thanks,
