Terminals?

I've just upgraded to RedHat 6.0 from 5.1 and while I realize that
several parts of this will be due to the changes in the underlying
libraries -- I'm running into the problem that now under Gnome/
Enlightment that my xterm and color xterm no longer function,
furthermore, the terminal window application from the task bar does
not seem to function properly -- it will start and then just give me
a blank screen, never seems to connect to a tty or pty.

I was wondering if there was some part of the documentation I haven't
came across that could help troubleshoot -- also, side note, anyway to
have a console that simply can print out the stderr from the window
manager?  Not really necessary, but a nice tool I've grown accustomed
to when using Solaris.
