More gnome-terminal strangeness on Solaris

Following on from the odd behaviour of vi in Solaris gnome-terminal:

If I make a big terminal window, I can use all the lines.
Until I start mc - then it just uses the top 24 lines. Lynx does this
too.
Both are linked against SLang 1.3.6

Then when I quit mc, the terminal *still* only uses the top 24 lines.

SLang apps behave fine in an xterm, so (guessing) this must
rule out SLang as the problem.

Is there something I can do to fix this? If this is a definite bug,
I'll submit it. (Heck, I gotta learn how at some point...)
