Transparent text background for desktop icons

OK people

Is it possible to have a transperent background for the text
assosiated with an icon on the desktop ?

This has come up several times in the last few months but an answer
has never been posted to the list. Can someone copy an answer to the
list so it show up when anyone searches the archives. maybe it should
also be in the FAQ as its the kind of thing people always try to do
(KDE has a button for this [that should get peoples attention :)]).
