PerlMagik breaks on compile

Any ideas on this compile problem?  Trying to get gnome setup on Solaris.  I
have read the webpage www.clanger9.demon.co.uk and did
configure --enable-shared like it says but I still have this compile
problem:

cd PerlMagick && /usr/local/bin/perl Makefile.PL
syntax error in file Makefile.PL at line 2, next 2 tokens "use ExtUtils"
syntax error in file Makefile.PL at line 19, next 2 tokens "\MY:"
Execution of Makefile.PL aborted due to compilation errors.
make[1]: *** [PerlMagick/Makefile] Error 255
make[1]: Leaving directory
`/users/bridavis/gnome-source/ImageMagick-4.2.4'
make: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
