try canvas widget. It offers lots of good stuff - see its docs, there is
even a demo code. I don't know if it's fast enough for you, but it surely
worked for me. Just see some of the gnome games using it. Both tetris clones
use it for sure (but gnometris only from ver. 1.1.0) and they have pretty
flicker-free gaming areas.
