icewm fails

I just insalled icewm latest to check it yout but I get failed save message
when I switch to icewm.  It asks to remove the program or cancel and give a
long ClientID message.  IF I click remove, icewm dies, if I click cancel it
goes away but comes back again.  All other window managers (enlightenment  
and wmaker) work from the capplet with no problems.  I just reinstalled
icewm but cannot switch when using gnome-session from my .xinitrc.

I can start icewm on its own and then invoke "panel".
