grey screen?

What's the deal about starting gnome-session in .xinitrc and merely
getting a default grey X screen?

Also, where and what format should the default gnome icons like yes / no
in the logout box have? I only get bitmap garbage.

Other than that I am getting further and further with the gnome compiling.
Either the bugs get worked out, or my machine is more and more like what
gnome expects ;)
