Gnome panel menus and the filesystem..

Hi folks!

I notice that I have .desktop files in /usr/local/share/gnome/apps
that don't appear in the actual panel menu.  Is this because the panel 
is smart enough to only display entries for programs I actually have
executables for, or is it (as I think) a bug somewhere?

And yeah, I've checked permissions about a billion times now. :)
