Try and see if X hangs when you use other window managers. fvwm2 and
twm should probably be present on your system, and possibly AfterStep
as well. XFree86 should not have a tendency to hang, so if you are
having problems, there should be a concrete reason for them. Check out
the FAQ at www.xfree86.org and see if you see something familiar.
Also, when you start X, start it like this:

startx > /tmp/some-error-file 2>&1

If X is doing something wrong, it will hopefully dump some useful
message in /tmp/some-error-file that you can use either to diagnose
the problem or to show to someone else to diagnose the problem.

Hopefully, this will give you a few leads.
