Color problems with GNOME

I have found that some apps will have terrible color flashing while
GNOME is running--at least in 8 bpp. These apps do not have problems
when GNOME is not running:

Window Maker
XCircuit

Other apps are just fine--no problems at all. It's almost like these
apps have an allergic reaction to GNOME.
