Problems compiling gnome-libs

Hi everybody,
I can't compile gnome-libs because it can't find libz.so when I
configure. I don't have root access so I had to install libz in a
nonstandard dir (i.e. not /lib, /usr/lib or /usr/local/lib). Is there a
way I can configure where I have installed libz?
