In general, just a make install is sufficient. If you keep doing that
with control-center or gnome-core, however, you sometimes get left with
artifacts of the old versions. Basically, if the location of a
application, applet or capplet changes within the directory tree between
versions, you find the old and the new versions both there.
The directories in question are
${prefix}/share/applets
${prefix}/share/control-center
${prefix}/share/gnome/apps
You can either prune these directories of old entries manually, or just
delete them before you do a make install. WARNING: Deleting these
directories will delete entries installed by other packages. For example
most GNOME programs put an entry in gnome/apps, a few put things in
applets or control-center.
