Gnome pager applet misbehaving.

I just installed GNOME v1.0 on system this weekend and have experienced
some strange things with the gnomepager_applet. After playing around with
the control center and e-config, I started up the gnomepager_applet and the
Xload on my machine shot up way up. X was eating up about 85% of the cpu time
and the gnomepager_applet was eating up the other 15%. The other wierd thing
is that the pager area in the pager applet is only 2 pixels wide or so. The
pager help button and window tasks are displayed properly but the virtual
desktops are displayed in an area about 2 pixels wide. If I click in the
small area, the desktop pages, but I can't see where I'm paging to.

I did an strace of X and gnomepager_applet and I've appended those below.

One other thing, when I start gnome and enligtenment, I can see the corner
of a window in the upper left hand side of my desktop. If I drag the window
into view, its title bar says "panel" on it. Is this a corner panel? and why
is it way off the desktop? Otherwise, GNOME looks great!
