Image Alpha Layers in Panel

I noticed that in the PNG icons for GNOME, the shadows have translucency
to them.  But when they are displayed in the panel (ie: foot icon menu ),
the shadows are not translucent, and they look all jaggedy.  Is there an
option somewhere for imlib or gnome to render these properly?
