Question about desktop

Quick question, and probably a simple one. When I first started Gnome, I
had a number of items on my desktop. They were:

Home/ directory
fd0
hdc
hdd

These files are also in my .gnome-desktop directory. However, when I log
out of Gnome, and log back in, these items are gone. They are still in
the .gnome-desktop directory. Why do they disappear? Thanks!
