There's gnome-ppp in the gnome-network package, but I doubt you had
that in the default 5.2 install because I don't think it was out then.

As far as permissions:

chmod a+s /usr/sbin/pppd

and

chmod a+rw /dev/ttyS2

replace ttyS2 with whatever device your modem is hooked up to.
