Finishing Up and Starting GNOME???

Hello,
I did what the instructions said to do, but when I enter startx I get my
old system.
I did notice that I don't have a /usr/share/gnome/defaults.session file.
Nor do I have
$HOME/.gnome/session file. What can I check for next?
