Both .xinitrc and .xsession can be used by startx, but
I don't which has preference over which. 
In my system, I have only a .xsession with

exec gnome-session

gnome-session should be the comand startx uses to
launch gnome, instead, for example, of the
enlightenment comand you had in your .xinitrc .
